A-Rod – The Many Lives of Alex Rodriguez by Selena Roberts Book Review

Selena Roberts’s book A-Rod – The Many Lives of Alex Rodriguez was already a media sensation even before its publication. Both Selena Roberts and Alex Rodriguez were famous enough to attract even people who have never liked reading a book of more than two hundred pages. Roberts has a way of engaging her listeners and readers, rendering you unable to walk away from the story she has woven.

I wasn’t a huge baseball fan, I was more of a tennis fan, but I saw enough of the sports news with my brother, who loved baseball, to know who Alex Rodriguez was. I was amazed at his talent and, in fact, he was the only baseball player in recent years that I knew. When Roberts revealed his use of steroids to aid his performance, thereby raising his stats, I was shocked. A part of me couldn’t deny that this talented player had cheated on all of us who cheered and supported him; but a part of me could not deny that this could also be possible. Roberts would not be so intrepid as to publish a book about something he had just speculated. There must be something we’ve all missed. Something that she apparently did not do.

It was not a great surprise to my brother that I had a copy of the book before most people had their own copy. In fact, my brother was the only person in his group of friends, all baseball fans of course, who appreciated Robert’s take on A-Rod, one of his favorite baseball players of all time. The unauthorized biography was more than an exposition of A-Rod’s steroid use; Roberts had delved deeper into who he was as a person, rather than focusing on the athlete we know. She presented facts from her childhood, how steroid use in her early years as a high school baseball player has become a habit she carried on until she played for the Texas Rangers. He writes in a way that he did not expect, more understanding than controversial.

Actually, the title of the book was appropriate. Roberts showed us A-Rod’s different experiences, all of which have contributed to why he used performance-enhancing drugs. What really surprised me was that Roberts hadn’t published the book without first confronting Rodriguez. That and the fact that the athlete did not deny the accusation. It was a brave move for both of them and people shouldn’t judge either of them for what they have done: Roberts for writing the book; Rodriguez for using steroids. It’s a good book, one that exposed more than controversial steroid use, and whether you’re a baseball or Roberts fan or not, A-Rod, The Many Lives of Alex Rodriguez by Selena Roberts is a book you shouldn’t miss. .
