The fourth generation of the Nissan 300zx came to the US market in 1990! Since its national launch, enthusiasts have been fascinated by this wonderful machine. Not only has it caught the attention of sports car drivers around the world, it has also garnered more awards than most cars ever dreamed of. In fact, speaking of dream cars…the 300ZX definitely should have been featured in The Fast and The Furious Series, as the fastest car.
With a top speed of 280 mph, the 300ZX holds the land speed record, awarded at the 1991 Bonneville Speed Trial. Go figure… that was without any serious modifications! The Z32 could easily hit 60mph in less than 6 seconds! The Fairlady Z made the Chevy Corvette, Mitsubishi 3000GT, Mazda RX-7, Dodge Viper, Toyota Supra, and Porsche 968 easily shut down in fear at the thought of racing it. But racing awards aren’t the only titles the 300ZX has under its hood.
In 1990, the first year of the fourth generation, Motor Trend named the 300ZX “Import Car of the Year” and “One of the Top Ten Performance Cars.” In addition, the Z32 was placed on Automobile magazine’s “All-Star” list and was honored with “Design of the Year” by the same forum. That same year, Road & Track and Car and Driver called the 300ZX “One of the ten best cars in the world.”
You’re probably reading this thinking… whatever. Many cars earn these distinctions in their first year and then quickly lose their popularity and fan base. While this is true for many vehicles, it did not and does not apply now to the Fairlady Z.
For seven years in a row, from 1990 to 1996, Car and Driver awarded the 300ZX “One of the Ten Best Cars,” and for five years, from 1990 to 1994, it was on Automobile magazine’s “All-Star” list. The Z32’s reputation is practically unheard of!
Even after Nissan stopped importing the Fairlady Z into the United States, it continued to win awards. Automobile Magazine named it one of the coolest cars of all time in 2004, and in 2006, gave it the distinction of being included in lists such as “20 of the Best Cars of the Last 20 Years” and “25 Most Beautiful Cars in America.” History”.
