Common equipment found in a gym

Going to the gym can be quite intimidating at first, as there are numerous pieces of equipment whose name and particular use are foreign to many. The different types of equipment found in a gym are basically classified as free weights or machines.

Free weight gym equipment is the basic equipment of bodybuilding. Free weights are so named because they do not have any attached pulleys, cables, pins, or weight stacks.

  • A barbell is a piece of free weight exercise equipment used in weight training, powerlifting, and powerlifting. The components of a bar are a metal bar, one or more sets of weight plates, and a set of collars. Its length can vary from 4 to 6 feet. Both hands are used to hold and lift the bar while doing the exercise.
  • A dumbbell is a type of free weight equipment used primarily for weight training that looks like a short or small bar with a typical length of 10 to 15 inches long. When performing dumbbell exercises, each hand holds a dumbbell. Adjustable dumbbells are those that have small collars hooked onto the ends of the dumbbells to hold the weight plates.
  • The EZ curl bar is a piece of free weight equipment designed primarily to target the biceps and triceps. It seems shorter than a bar with angled positions. Compared to the regular bar, the EZ curl is ideal for working muscles at different angles, as it reduces stress on the wrist.

The other category of gym equipment is the machine. Gym machine equipment helps build and strengthen muscles, as well as burn extra fat and calories.

  • The treadmill is an exercise machine that is used to run or walk while staying in one place. Recent treadmill models are now equipped with digital meters to indicate speed, number of calories burned, heart rate, and distance covered. The training intensity can be decreased or increased through the adjustment functions provided. Using the treadmill for exercise puts stress on the ankles, knees, and lower back, which can result in running or walking on a normal surface.
  • The elliptical trainer is a stationary machine for non-impact cardiovascular workouts ranging from light to high power as the user prefers. This is a machine that is suitable for a full body workout without excessive stress on the joints and reduces the risk of impact injuries.
  • An exercise bike, also known as a stationary bike or exercycle, is just like a real bike without wheels. It is an exercise machine that is used to tone the lower part of the body, work legs, thighs and hips. Using the stationary bike is known to strengthen the legs and reduce fat deposits on the hips and thighs. There are exercise bikes with digital meters that help the user to mark the distance traveled, speed, the number of calories burned and the time spent cycling. Stationary bikes are used for cardiovascular and weight-loss exercises; as well as to increase general physical condition and train for cycling events.
