Rolf’s Record is one of the best sellers of the 60’s

Rolf Harris has emerged as one of the biggest-selling chart stars of the 1960s, according to a study.

The Official Charts Company found that the Australian song ‘Two Little Boys’ ranked nineteenth on a list of the top twenty best-selling singles of the 1960s, which was unsurprisingly dominated by the Beatles.

She Loves You topped the chart and the Fab Four were responsible for a total of six songs appearing in the top twenty chart, while there were surprise entries for Ken Dodd and The Archies.

Rolf Harris is currently juggling his music and art career this year as he tours his ‘A Life in Art’ exhibition across the country while appearing at Glastonbury festival alongside Gorillaz, Dizzee Rascal and Snoop Dogg.

The octogenarian’s artwork was given greater seriousness during the latter part of his life as the quality of his skills became more and more appreciated and he was honored with an exhibition of his work at the National Gallery in 2002.

“As an artist, there is no greater recognition than being invited to exhibit my paintings at the National Gallery, one of the best galleries in the world,” he said.

His Rolf on Art programme, which ran throughout 2002, was also the most watched art show in history and proved his popularity with the British public.

“The great British institutions, the BBC and the National Gallery, are two of the custodians of our cultural heritage. I am immensely proud and honored to be associated with both,” he added.

Rolf Harris prints soon became popular with art lovers and sadly also with thieves, as several of the artist’s paintings were stolen from an Oxfordshire gallery in 2004.

Two rare prints by Rolf Harris were taken during the raid on Peppard Common, while one titled ‘The Boxer’ was estimated to be worth around £8,000.

Rolf has said that hosting his popular television shows inspired him to paint and this led to a very successful and lucrative career at the end of his life.

He told the BBC: “During the making of Rolf on Art, I was genuinely inspired to paint more. In fact, I haven’t put my brushes down since. For the first time in many years, I felt the joy of painting, of sharing my thoughts. and my advice with the audience”.

Rolf Harris was recently seen at the Chelsea Flower Show with his wife Alwen.
