Taco Stand Entrepreneurs Cook Up A Fortune

Many people think that starting their own business can only be allowed by the well-educated or that it takes a lot of money and that is so complicated that only an Ive Leaguer could handle it. The most frequently heard phrase when talking about entrepreneurship is “I can’t do it” or “I have no idea what to do.” or how about, “I don’t think I’m cut out for that.” Most people are intimidated by the idea of going off on their own, being their own boss, or taking responsibility for the property. They have the false belief that they are not smart enough or worthy of owning a business.

For most people, starting on their own is simply answering the question, “How can I take what I already know and do it better than anyone else?” The first thing to consider is doing something that you really like. Get involved in something that you are already passionate about.

I know that sometimes it is not possible to examine your true passion because perhaps your passion is not shared by many. In that case, find a niche, a need, and just fill it to the best of your ability. There are many valuable services that do not require years of learning before you qualify to be a provider.

Get your brain going.

What do you do to start the creative process? First, take a sheet of paper and write down five to seven things that you like to do or are really good at. Example: I am very good with plants, I love working with growing things, I love dogs, I really like cooking, I am good at introducing myself to people. Just write what you think; it doesn’t have to make sense.

Now make a list of the things that you don’t like and think would be good. Maybe you are a good truck driver, but you don’t want to travel. Or you like to sell at the flea market but you don’t like retail sales. When you’re done with both lists, ask yourself: Are there three to five products or services that benefit me and my family, and if so, what are they?

Don’t be afraid to dig into your personal life, whatever your situation, and determine which products or services make your life better, easier or happier, make you more productive or efficient, or just give you more time. From there, what service could you provide to others to help them enjoy life more? Sometimes it’s the simplest things that make people happy. It doesn’t have to be complicated or difficult to understand, it just has to be functional.

Now turn the paper over and write the same question about your work life. Look at what you like and what you don’t like about the work you’ve been doing, as well as what others like and don’t like about you. Lastly, ask yourself why you want to start your own business in the first place. Then when all is said and done, look for a rationale that comes out (i.e. is there a need for a company to do one of the things it likes or is good at?).

They filled the need with Roberto’s tacos to go

Let me give you an example.

I live in San Diego, California, in an area that contains a university. Five blocks from my house there is any type of kitchen that a person could want. College students and people who work in small businesses have to get out because there aren’t many easily accessible places to go during lunchtime.

Several years ago, two brothers found this lunch situation very frustrating and realized the potential of starting a quick take-out service. There just weren’t many affordable options where a person could get a quick lunch. Despite abundant restaurants, parking and waiting lines made lunch impossible.

They opened a taco stand near the university, where people could grab a quick lunch and go back to class or work. They gave their customers an extra amount on the tacos and friendly service to boot. They were the first to invent the fish taco which became a huge success. Today its taco stands are in five western states. They saw the opportunity and, with very little cash, they provided a product and service that was well received. While these brothers initially thought they were meeting a local need, they actually found a universal demand. His situation was not unique to his area, in fact, it was common to many areas.

Another way to get ideas is to listen to your co-workers, family or neighbors, their wants and needs. Hear what frustrates them and they would buy. Sometimes your brain goes into a particular idea mode and fresh ideas can come from relaxing and simply looking around or talking to people you know. For example, when I need something to write an article about, I look at business stories where I can extract ideas to build a foundation. They activate my own previous business experiences. Now I find many opportunities to encourage you to start your own business, just as I did in the past. Maybe I still have a chance to do something too.

Some opportunities are made to order

It’s that simple, having an idea can be nothing more than keeping your eyes and ears open for the latest business craze to come. New and innovative companies emerge all the time. Some are very successful and some do not last long. Another possibility is an online business. There is a wealth of information on the Internet waiting for the opportunists. The only thing you have to do is be careful because when diving into the ocean you can be eaten by sharks.

Happy traces
