Using an ovulation predictor to test when to conceive a boy

A surprising number of people who write to me asking when to conceive a baby boy are only guessing when their ovulation will actually occur. Most of them simply choose an arbitrary day some time after the end of the menstrual period. Some use methods like taking your temperature or taking a look at your cervical mucus, but very few actually use ovulation predictors.

This frustrates me a bit because ovulation predictors are not expensive or difficult to use. They are readily available and using them could make the difference between choosing the perfect day to conceive and getting the results you want and not reaching your goal. So, in the following article, I will discuss how ovulation predictors can be used in your quest to conceive a boy.

Opportune time for conception to happen late in the fertile window: (chasing the egg instead of waiting for it 🙂 If you want to conceive a child, you will have to adopt a later time frame. I know it’s tempting to want to have sex and try to conceive any day you think you might get pregnant, but if you really care about choosing the gender of your baby, you should resist this temptation. If you try to conceive before you ovulate, you are essentially increasing your chances of accidentally conceiving a girl.

Female sperm have a generous lifespan and will usually be able to remain healthy and viable while waiting for the egg to become viable as well. However, male sperm are not so lucky. Their time frame is not as generous as they live fewer days than girls. So the best thing to do is to wait until you are completely sure that the egg is viable and has been released. The way to do this, of course, is to use an ovulation predictor kit.

What are your options when it comes to ovulation predictors: The different types available: The most commonly used ovulation predictors generally measure urine and saliva. First, let’s cover the variety of urine. These measure the level of luteinizing hormone (LH) in the urine. These kits usually give you about 5-7 sticks that you urinate on and wait for a positive result. (This is usually a plus or minus sign or something else that will indicate a positive or negative result.) Typically, you’ll get a “surge” of LH as you approach ovulation. Generally, once you get this increase, you will also get a positive result, and soon after, the ovum will be released. If you want to conceive a boy, you must wait until you get a positive result using urine before attempting intercourse.

Now, let’s move on to saliva predictors. They’re basically a little microscope that you put a few drops of saliva into and then look at the patterns as they dry to tell you where you are in your fertility cycle. These kits measure your estrogen levels instead of your LH surge. Estrogen rises as ovulation approaches, so as you approach this period, you’ll start to see a kind of “fern pattern.” This sounds complicated, but it’s actually not that bad. Most kits come with very specific and comprehensive photos that you can compare to your own slide to see exactly where you are in your cycle.

Because conceiving a girl requires you to conceive before ovulation, I often recommend saliva predictors for those wanting a girl. But they also work great for couples wanting a boy, and they’re reusable, making them cheaper. Some people use both urine and saliva to make absolutely sure they are conceiving on the correct day.

Most people wait too late to start ovulation tests: The final point I want to make is that most people will only start testing a few days before they think they will get a positive result. This is sometimes too late. It’s important to understand that your ovulation date can change drastically from month to month. Some women are very lucky and very regular, but this is not true of all of us.

I recommend starting testing no later than 7 days after the end of your period. Also, you should continue testing until you get a positive result. I can’t tell you how many people write to me and say they gave up after they ran out of their urine test strips only to use saliva only to find out they were ovulating much later than they had assumed. Once they learned this, they had to wait another month to start over.
