What was Gilligan’s first name?

The seven castaways on Gilligan’s Island were rarely called by their full names. This was in keeping with the wishes of series creator Sherwood Schwartz. I wanted to keep the characters as “prototypes instead of being completely flesh and blood.” In doing so, many people who have seen the series never knew the full name of the characters. Unlike Gilligan, the rest of the team had full names that were used throughout the series. Some were only used once during the first episode when a radio broadcast was used to introduce the characters and explain how they were stranded on the island.

Gilligan

It was never made clear whether “Gilligan” was a given name or a last name. There was an urban legend that said that Gilligan was in fact a last name and that her first name was “Willy”. This fact was confirmed by Sherwood Schwartz, who originally named the character Willy Gilligan. This name, however, was never used in the show.

The captain too

Whereas the crew and the castaways never call him anything other than Skipper. It is revealed in the first episode that the captain, an old salt in these waters, was named Jonas Grumby.

The millionaire

The millionaire’s full name was Thurston Howell III. In the first episode it is said that Mr. Howell was a billionaire and one of the richest men in the world.

And his wife

With the exception of Thurston Howell III, all referred to “his wife” as Mrs. Howell. Mr. Howell always called her “Lovey” and that’s how she was introduced in the first episode. The penultimate script of the second season explained that Lovey was just a nickname and that her real name was Eunice.

Movie star

The glamorous actress referred to as Ginger throughout the show was Ginger Grant. She went to the cruise still in the evening dress from the act at the nightclub the night before.

The teacher

The most intelligent of the castaways and the person who did the most to keep everyone alive was the professor. He was a research scientist and a renowned chief explorer. His real name was Roy Hinkley

And mary ann

Mary Ann Summers of Winfield, Kansas was the last castaway. I was on vacation in Hawaii and working at the Winfield General Store.

An interesting curiosity is that the pilot for Gilligan’s Island could not be used due to the fact that three members of the cast had been replaced.
