The markets are where you want to be to find just about anything local and handmade. Fruits and vegetables, jewelry, clothing, dresses, and other items handmade by the islanders are available at affordable prices. If you are staying in Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, the central market is a must visit. You will find it along with many other shopping opportunities on the Kumul Highway near the Ministry of Finance.

Local supermarkets stock a variety of local, international and English foods and products. You’ll find Au Bon Marche, Port Vila’s largest chain, in several different locations around the city center.

Hours

Shops and markets usually open around 8am on weekdays and close around 5pm On Saturday most shops close at noon and Sunday is a widely recognized day off.

Badge

Vatu is the national currency of the islands and will be accepted at any establishment you decide to visit. Vatu denominations start with VUV1 coins and end with VUV5000 banknote. The four main banks, Westpac, ANZ, BRED and the National Bank of Vanuatu, offer currency exchange services to foreigners who need them.

If you’re traveling from Australia, you’ll also be glad to know that a number of establishments will accept Australian dollars instead of Vatu, but it’s always worth checking before you buy.
