Interesting facts about the city of Hertford in Hertfordshire

At a distance but very close to London is the city of Hertford in the county of Hertfordshire in England. It is a lovely reminder of a genteel English way of life and seems rarely touched by modern civilization, with the exception of traffic. The city has a lot to offer and was ranked as one of the ten best places to live in 2006.

Many estates grace the land and the town of Hertford. Included in these are Hertford Castle, which is a beautiful castle that Edward IV lived in, who rebuilt it to greatness. It now holds the area’s town hall which also contributes to the area’s economy.

Also visible in the financial health of the city is one of the last privately owned breweries in the area. McMullens Brewery is responsible for maintaining the jobs of many of its citizens. Many people also commute to London and live in Hertford as the rails and commuter trains are very effective for many.

Hartford, Connecticut was co-founded and named after the town of Hertford. Puritan minister Samuel Stone came from Hertford to the Americas and established this colony. Both are pronounced the same but have different spellings. The town is also said to be the basis for the book Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, who is said to have based the fictional town of Meryton on the town of Hertford.

The city’s natives are also the band Deep Purple and actor Rupert Grint, best known for the Harry Potter series. Other shows have been filmed within the city limits due to its picturesque heritage and beautiful scenery.

Although the town of Hertford does not have a shopping centre, it does have many smaller shops that are very customer friendly. There are also over twenty pubs and restaurants to visit. These establishments have regular visitors not only from local citizens, but also from London and other counties.
