your ego is not your friend

There is a true ego and a false ego. The false ego is who you “think” you are; the truth is who you to know you are. One is from the lower self; the other is from the Higher Self. The true ego feels good when it thinks, says or does something good. The good feeling comes with humility and gratitude, which is the recognition that the good was not caused by him alone, but in conjunction with his inner or higher Self. He knows that he didn’t do it just because of his personality, and he is grateful for this knowledge and power.

The false ego, on the other hand, thinks that all the good it does is for itself alone. He thinks he is God; that the world revolves around him alone. He can’t see anything else and he doesn’t want to see anything else. Nothing is bigger or better than himself. It is about him first, last and always.

This is your false coping mechanism, your false survival method, your false security blanket, your false comfort zone. Such a person may be materially successful but he will never be very healthy, happy, peaceful, or free—because he is living in falsehood and not in reality.

The false ego is very subtle, devious and powerful. Correcting it is the most difficult challenge we face in life because it doesn’t want to die, it doesn’t want to commit suicide. He wants to continue the illusion that he is God, and he will do everything possible to maintain that illusion.

The only way to annihilate or neutralize the false ego is through some form of what we call “meditation”. Meditation in this context means a form of transcend thought because thinking instead of knowing is of the insecure ego instead of the truth. To get to the truth we have to bypass the ego. Pure meditation is how you do it.

But here’s the catch: if you meditate for the objective to overcome the ego you will fail because then your meditation is no longer pure. Purity means without effort or without purpose. If that is your “no intention”, then you will defeat the false personal ego because then the selfish thinking mind is not part of the equation. Only the thinking mind is what deceives and empowers the false ego in the first place. And you can’t solve a problem with the same mind that caused it.

Although pure meditation does not have a purpose, it does have a result. The result is that the false ego is exposed as illusory. And anything exposed can be dropped at will, while anything hidden is extremely difficult to beat.

Pure meditation is simply the practice of keeping a little distance of everything you see, hear, think, feel and do, all the time, to the best of your ability.
