Six Simple Tips for Publishing Your Academic Journal Article

Here are six tips for publishing your academic work in a peer-reviewed journal:

* Do not try to publish your article in a magazine that does not suit your topic. If you still don’t read the magazine regularly, find a copy and understand the types of articles they publish. Then make sure your article conforms to that standard.

* Choose a magazine and then submit your article to it. Make sure your manuscript cites multiple articles from the publication. Pay attention to editorial advice and be sure to cite several of those authors as well. Many of those colleagues review your manuscript.

* Be sure to check the shipping guidelines. The journal may have a specific article length they are looking for, the ways they want their information cited, whether or not they want me to write an abstract. Not following these guidelines is an easy way for the magazine editor to reject your article.

* Edit! Please do not submit a paper full of grammar or English usage errors. Editors often use typographical and grammatical errors as an easy way to put articles in the reject pile. Find a colleague to edit your article or a professional academic publishing company. Every writer makes mistakes, so make sure someone else catches them before submitting your article.

* Find a single angle. Being familiar with the magazine can help you understand if your idea has already been published. Be specific with your topic, don’t drift too far into other ideas or topics. Be concentrated.

* If the journal requires a query letter first, and not the full article, be sure to get the editor’s attention with your query. Include information on the subject of your article, the specific length, and when you could submit it.

Follow these tips and you will greatly increase your chances of expanding your resume with a few posts. Good luck!
